Around twenty five Cherokee Youth Riders arrived in Greene County and Strafford on Sunday afternoon, June 16th, 2013. They are participating in a Remember the Removal bike ride along the Trail of Tears.
They began their journey in the state of Georgia and average 35 ( a slow day ) to 50 miles per day on bikes. The City of Strafford provided a rest stop and refreshments for them at the Strafford Sports Complex. They started Sunday in Lebanon and rode on to Springfield to end their day. The Trail of Tears passed across land which is now the Sports Complex . The Historic Sites Board of Greene County had a marker dedication in April of 2011 on Farm Road 249 on the east side of the complex.

Beautiful weather and happy crowds. The City Administrator, Steve Bodenhamer , and I enjoyed visiting with people who stopped at the City Booth.
The fire department’s “burn”demonstration was a very informative event. The short period of time it took smoke to start collecting at the ceiling was very evident. A house with a sprinkler system installed will certainly add needed time for occupants to get out of a burning house.

Every year Strafford celebrates a piece of American history that rolls through our town, the “Mother Road”, Old Route 66. Along the downtown area of Strafford, with the famous road in view, the town gathers and invites visitors to our community’s only outdoor festival, complete with food, fun, and music.
The annual festival includes a classic car and antique tractor show, tractor pull, crafts fair, games and rides for the entire family, tasty food, live music, a “kid zone,” and the one-day Route 66 Museum. We invite your family and friends to come join our community as we celebrate the legacy of this great road that is important to our community and our country.
